The rise of blatant bigotry in America under Trump has made it hard for most people comfortably travel. And now it will become harder once again.

FAQ
Where is the data from?
We have taken the precinct voting data in the Harvard Dataverse for the presidential election in 2020, and used that to draw areas in the US that are very Deep Red in their voting. As data for 2024 is state-by-state, it will take us a while to include it as well.
What are the Deep Red areas?
We use the voting data to display how “red” the current precinct in the map is, but also to show how possible travel routes compare in their redness.
Why do the areas change when I zoom out?
As you zoom out, we switch to clustered precincts to make it easier to visualize, and then to Congressional districts. The voting of these is averaged from their precincts, which may not map perfectly to their official tallies.
Do you include data from hate crimes or other safety information?
Over time, we will add more data to enrich this beyond Trump voting, but data is very hard to gather and normalize. Also, much of this data is unavailable. Hate crimes, for instance, are underreported, and not gathered effectively by the FBI, nor are they tagged by location..
